Recovery After Compression of TPE

Since TPE is a ductile material at elevated processing temperatures, one of its most important characteristics is compression recovery. The residual compression strain (CS – compression set) of thermoplastic elastomers is measured at room temperature (23 °C), 70 °C, and 100 °C. The percentage of non-recovery after prolonged compression for 24 or 72 hours is an indicator of material quality.

For example, high-quality grades of thermoplastic elastomers used in window seal production typically show residual compression of about 40% (24 h, 70 °C). The residual compression ratio directly depends on the TPE composition — including the amount of filler, oil, and other additives, as well as the number of reprocessing cycles during product manufacturing.

Special low-compression-set (LCS) grades of TPE exhibit a residual compression ratio of around 42% (24 h, 100 °C), even outperforming EPDM rubber, which is also commonly used for window seal production.
