The brittleness temperature of TPE is a parameter of great interest to many users. Most TPE manufacturers indicate that their materials remain flexible below –55°C, but the exact value is often unspecified, and the test methods for determining brittleness are not standardized.
We believe that the method most representative of real operating conditions is not the one defined by GOST 7912-74 (used for rubber), but rather the method described in GOST 2678-94, “Roll Roofing and Waterproofing Materials.”
This standard determines flexibility by bending a sample over a mandrel with a radius of 0 mm at subzero temperatures (a test of frost resistance). In this method, a TPE sample plate is cooled to a negative temperature and bent over a 0 mm radius mandrel — in other words, folded in half.
The lowest temperature at which cracks appear on the outer surface of the bent sample defines the frost resistance limit (brittleness temperature) of the TPE.
In our product range, we offer TPE grades with flexibility at temperatures below –65°C. Products made from these grades can withstand compression, twisting, and folding in half without cracking, even under extremely low temperatures.
